What to Know About Summer Internships
What to Know About Summer Internships Image via Pixabay.com So, whatâs the very first thing you need to know about summer internships if you want to have a successful one? Start Early Do not, I repeat, do not wait until a week before May starts to actually begin your hunt for the ultimate summer internship experience. Preparation for a summer internship should start months in advance. When I transferred to Florida State University in the fall of 2016, I began to meet with students who were on their A-game when it came time to prepare for and landing internships. They started preparing almost a year in advance to make sure that they were ready to apply for the summer internship of their dreams. They knew that acceptance weighs heavily on how prepared candidates are for the internship. While starting preparation a year before a summer internship might sound silly or even too ambitious, itâs actually a really smart move. If the internship program youâre thinking of applying to is in a competitive field, itâs best to apply as soon as possible. Applying quickly could make the difference when it comes time to start hiring interns into the company. It also helps to start saving money months (or years) in advance if you know that acceptance as an intern with a certain company means that youâll have to live in another part of the world for a few months. Youâll need money for rent, time to figure out housing arrangements, and other financial plans. Infographic by Brittany Hawes We now see that starting early is essential. But what does âstarting earlyâ entail for summer internship hopefuls? For one, it means that you should⦠Begin searching for internship opportunities as soon as possible Ready to embark on your search for the perfect summer internship? There are so many online resources out there that will make your search a little easier. One website that you can use to find an internship is called Internships.com. Small businesses and large companies alike post listings specifying what they are looking for in an intern, and will list duties that must be completed by interns, if hired. Internships.com allows you to apply to listings directly from the website. You can also build an appealing profile for hiring managers to look over. If you want an internship that offers payment for your services, check out WayUp.com. When signing up, youâre asked questions like your favorite hobbies and jobs that interest you, all of which will help employers decide if youâre the right fit for the job. After signing up and verifying your email address, youâll be taken directly to job listings that match your interests. All of the jobs offer pay, too! Searching online may provide a wider variety of internships, but you can also try asking your classmates for internship opportunities. Chances are that the upperclassmen will know of or will have heard of internship opportunities that are seeking out students in your major. They might also be able to provide you with tips that will make the hiring process a bit simpler. Asking your professor or school advisor can also lead to finding summer internships. Some professors might even have internships opportunities available during the summer that you can participate in. This is ideal, especially for those students who are unable to travel far from home during summer break. But what are some But Also, beginning your preparation to apply earlier means that youâre giving yourself plenty of time Start building your internship portfolio Starting early also means that you should begin working on your portfolio as soon as you can. The sooner, the better because a portfolio is something every student should be working on throughout college. Internship portfolios should contain any kind of documentation that will show potential employers your education, extracurricular activities, training, skills, abilities, and strengths. For example, if you are certified in CPR? That should go in there. Have an outstanding resume? Put it in there. You happen to be the treasurer of the SGA and vice-president of the Black Student Union? Put both positions into your internship portfolio, along with a list of your duties and the accomplishments you were able to achieve while in your position. Anything that makes you look good should be in your internship portfolio. Portfolios can be physical or digital. You can compile physical documentation and arrange it nicely in a professional-looking binder. You can also create an ePortfolio. ePortfolios are electronic portfolios that can be viewed on an electronic device. ePortfolios can be created using free website building software like Weebly.com or Wix.com. Both are very simple to use but still allow for creativity, so you can make sure you stand out to employers! Donât have a lot of experience just yet or donât have the documents to prove it? Donât worry! This is why starting as early as you can is the way to go. Use the time leading into the application window to work on gaining new skills and training. If youâre in class, put as much effort as possible into projects and list them in your portfolio. Video projects and images are especially good for internships, as they easily show your creativity, passion, and skill. Keep in mind what kind of internship it is that you want to land. If you know that the employer you wish to work with places a high value on candidates who have experience working with children, you can try working as a volunteer at the public schools in your area or becoming an afterschool tutor for students in grade school. If one of your duties as an intern will be to edit film, try completing a few film projects of your own that will showcase your talent in Adobe Premiere or other video editing software. Remember, passion alone isnât always going to be enough for employers. For example, a video game company wants its interns to have a deep love for video games, but just being a video game enthusiast wonât be enough to land you the internship, especially if itâs with a major company that might have hundreds of interested people applying for the same position. Youâll need to possess the skills that the company is looking for, be it game development experience or overall knowledge of the gaming industry. Standing out is how you are going to get yourself hired! Once you land a summer internship, make sure you take the time to celebrateas hard as you worked to get the internship, youâre going to need to work even harder while youâre at the internship. After all, this is your dream! You shouldnât half-do it now that you managed to get it! Some things to know about the actual internship experience⦠Working hard will pay off This is your chance to shine at a company youâre crazy about or you want to work with someday. Nowâs not the time to get lazy and search for ways to check your Instagram feed while on the job! No matter how tempting it may be to spend all your internship hours surfing the Internet for hilarious memes, you need to make the most of your experience here. And to do that, youâre going to have to work. Even if youâre tasked with a job as simple as grabbing Starbucks for your boss, do your absolute best at it! This is the time to make yourself known at the company, and you do want to be known as someone with a great work ethic, right? Not the person who plays Internet Checkers when they think thereâs nobody looking! Image via Pixabay.com Connections must be made You might be there to work, but youâre also there to network! Take the time to get to know all that you can about the people who work for the company. Make friends with as many people as possible and learn from them. Having these kinds of friends and connections in the business will help you out later down the road when itâs time to start on your career path. One of the best things you can do at your job is simply to smile. If youâre frowned up and look unapproachable, you wonât attract any good attention. A worker with a friendly, genuine smile and positive attitude will attract other people. After all, people like to be around someone who makes them feel good and seems like theyâre enjoying life. Be that someone! A positive attitude helps There are going to be days when you think that you made a mistake or that youâre not being utilized as much as you could be. If this is just a once-in-a-while feeling, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you made it: youâre an intern at [Insert Your Dream Company Here]. The work may not always be as exciting as you hoped it would be, but youâre there and youâre actually learning things that are going to come in handy later in the future. However, if you feel as though the internship truly is a waste of time, speak with your supervisor and ask them if thereâs something more challenging you could be working on. Offer to help with a certain project or to help plan a certain event. Show them how much you can do! Chances can be (and should be!) taken Interns might feel like they get pushed to the side when it comes to doing real work, but you donât have to sit there and take that treatment. Go and take risks! If you have an idea that you have thoroughly researched and think will benefit the company or a certain project, take a chance and put that idea out there. The worst your higher-ups can do is shoot it down. But thereâs always the chance that theyâll love it and theyâll use it and that youâll have helped out in a very big way. The final thing you should know about internships is that itâs not always going to be easy. An internship is essentially a job and youâre going to be held to those high standards. When an employer hires you on, they expect you to give them your best. Never go into an internship with the idea that you wonât be expected to do much. Be prepared to give it your all, no matter what the task is. After all, your summer internship experience is only as good as you make it! Thanks for reading! Get to know your students with these fun activities
Get to know your students with these fun activities Many of you have likely started your teach abroad placements and are still getting to know your classroom (or maybe even classrooms!) of students. Whether youâre an ESL teacher or a certified teacher in a public or international school, the better you know your students as individuals, the better placed youâll be when it comes to addressing their learning needs on an individual basis. The great thing is you can make getting to know your students a fun process by reserving a small amount of time at the beginning or end of a class every once in a while for a short game thatâs both enjoyable and educational. So take some time to connect by trying one of these three activities!Twenty questionsNot only is this a great opportunity to learn a little bit more about your studentsâ personal interests, it also gets them asking each other questions to problem solve. To play this game, each person thinks of a person or an object, and their partner has to figure out which person or thing the y have chosen using 20 questions that result in a yes or no answer. These questions could be anything from âIs this person male or female?â to âIs this person a musician?â This might also teach you a little more about cultural icons, depending on where you are teaching.Would you rather...?This activity is particularly good for getting to know your students better, because it asks them to identify their personal preferences.Keep a list of questions for your students that start, âWould you ratherâ¦â Some examples include âWould you rather be able to fly or read minds?â, âWould you rather be famous or be the best friend of a famous person?â, âWould you rather have more time or more money?âYou can have your students participate in this activity in a number of ways: you can either have them move to one side of the room if they answer one way, the other side of the room if they answer the other way; you can ask students individually; or you can group students and ask them to come up with their own questions and then share them. This game is also a good way to gather some feedback around classroom activity. For example, you could ask more learning-oriented questions and see what preferences your students have.Q&A sessionSometimes just the open opportunity to ask questions can be fun and beneficial. Whenever youâre left with a few minutes at the end of a class, you can open the floor for them to ask you any questions that theyâd like. You can either theme the questions (things we studied in class today, cultural questions, new vocabulary, or anything else you can think of), or you can let them ask whatever theyâd like! When this exercise is centered around classroom lessons and activity, it will benefit all students, even those that choose not to ask questions, because though only a few students may actually ask questions aloud, many will have similar questions. If youâre working in a country where students seem particularly discouraged from asking questions of you, you can try to overcome this by grouping students into smaller groups and asking them to come up with one question as a group to ask you all together. Then no one student is singled out.Whatever activities you choose, make sure you remember to model for your students so that they can see what the game looks likeâ"youâll have a higher participation rate this way!

How Do You Get Paid For Your Time?
How Do You Get Paid For Your Time? The School Bus-drivers, the school bus drivers and the personal assistant(Personal assistants) have something to do with this when they are being paid by the School bus driver's employer to be a tutor. This is something that is done quite regularly and not just with the school buses, but with all other types of transport vehicles in order to get the maximum income, at the minimum expense. You might wonder why someone would go to a school and talk to children without paying them for their time. Many times, it is because of fear. Fear that if they do not pay for their time, the owner will lose their job. When a tutoring service has become successful and they are earning quite a bit of money, the owner of the tutoring company would rather see the new money generated go to them, rather than the person who arranged the meeting with the student. So, how do you get paid for your time?Well, you are an independent contractor and you must choose the work that yo u are going to do. This is your career, so, make sure that you know the work that you will be doing, before signing a contract.A tutor can do lots of things for a student. They can learn to write, play sports, put up their own resume, learn how to fix computers and many more. But, sometimes, they need to use their creativity skills to come up with their own idea and they need to find an activity that they can do on their own.A tutor can usually find this task quite interesting and they may have some time to spend doing it. So, this is where they start making money, as they are not actually working. This is a way to make the owner happy and at the same time they will earn some extra money too.If a student wants to talk to a tutor for some reason, this can really help and it will not cost them anything either. So, the parents should know about the nature of the job and how it is offered so that they can take advantage of it.

What is it Like to Attend University of Richmond
What is it Like to Attend University of Richmond The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Rafy earned his Bachelors degree in Biology from the University of Richmond in 2013. He is now a Washington D.C. tutor specializing in Calculus tutoring, Chemistry tutoring, Biology tutoring, and several other subjects. Check out his review of the University of Richmond: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Rafy: The University of Richmond campus is beautiful, secluded, and safe. The campus is only 15 minutes away from downtown Richmond and several shopping areas. Having a car is a big plus since the city's transportation system is not great. However, the university provides shuttles to the popular shopping areas and to several volunteering destinations. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Rafy: Most professors do not have teaching assistants. Given the small class sizes, the professors are available during class and in their offices. Most professors have office hours, and they are available to set up meetings outside the classroom. Academic advisers are also available throughout the semester, and they set up meetings before semester registration to make sure their students are on track to graduate. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Rafy: Over 90% of the students choose to live on campus all four years. I think that shows that campus life is absolutely a big part of the college experience at the University of Richmond. There are several dorms, townhouses, and apartments to choose from. You can also choose to live in a single bedroom or have roommates. Students are also allowed to purchase parking passes for their cars all four years. There are several dining options on campus. The main cafeteria has fantastic food with a wide variety of options. There are also several special dining days like Caribbean nights, sushi nights, etc. In addition, there are several other dining options, such as fast food and sandwich shops around campus. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Rafy: The programs most represented at the University of Richmond are business-related, like business administration, marketing, and international studies. I majored in biology with a concentration in pre-health studies because I wanted to apply to dental school. The university has a good pre-health program, with several events and guest speakers to raise awareness about the program. This is reflected in the high acceptance rate to medical and dental schools. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Rafy: The students in general are very friendly. Most students are always looking to make new friends, especially during freshman year. Given the small school size, seeing the same people on a daily basis also helps in making friends. Greek life is big on campus, and it plays a significant role in the campus social life. However, most of their events are open to all students, which means most students do not feel pressured to join Greek life. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Rafy: The Career Center at the University of Richmond has several good resources for students, starting with writing resumes and cover letters to helping with interview preparation and the career search. The Career Center website is also very helpful, as several companies post their internships and post-graduation positions on the website. They actively look to recruit students from the university. Several reputable companies, especially ones in the Washington, D.C. area and New York City, recruit students and conduct interviews on campus throughout the academic year. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Rafy: There are several study areas that are readily available to students. Dorms have study lounges, but they are not very big. Most students choose to study in academic buildings or the library, which is open 24/7. The library can get crowded during busy evenings, but you can always find a place to work. There are different sections designed for different study habits. There are silent areas, quiet areas, group-study areas, and rooms available for individual or group work. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Rafy: Richmond is a great city. It is not a very big city, but it is also not a small one. The city has great history that is well presented in many areas. There are many local restaurants, coffee shops, and breweries in the area. There are several festivals throughout the year that give Richmond its own identity. In addition, the downtown area is very alive during the weekdays and weekend. Many students go downtown for these festivals, restaurants, and other events. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Rafy: The undergraduate student body is just over 3,000 students. It is small enough to see the same faces on a daily basis, but it is big enough to always meet new people. The class sizes are typically small. The introductory courses never exceeded 30 students per class. The higher-level courses that I took, which were in the science field, never exceeded 12-16 students per class. I was very pleased with the small class size because I always knew that I could raise my hand and ask the professor to repeat any concept I did not understand during class. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Rafy: One of my favorite professors at the University of Richmond is Dr. Krista Stenger. She was the reason I became interested in molecular biology. I took several courses with her. She was more than a professorshe was a mentor to any student who sought her help. She also assigned students to do part of her research in the immunology lab course. I gained experience in several lab techniques that most students do not gain during their undergraduate studies. In addition, she was very excited to help me with my applications to dental school and applications to work in research labs. Check out Rafys tutoring profile. The Key Ingredient to Leadership - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / The Key Ingredient to Leadership - Introvert Whisperer The Key Ingredient to Leadership Many people are reluctant to step forward and take the initiative or leadership without deliberate âpermissionâ by management to do so. Imagine if every leader in every setting waited to be given permission. Nothing would get done. Youâd have nothing but chaos. You have to understand that even when you are given authority or a title that no one actually gives you permission to take action. You must find the power in yourself to step forward and be responsible for your work and the work of others. You empower or authorize YOU. No one can actually do this for you and is the catalyst behind every person that steps up to lead. Another way for you to think about this is to think of it as informal leadership or leading without a title. Even though it doesnât get discussed very often, it doesnât mean that it isnât expected or even required in every group. A manager/leader simply canât cover all of the bases all the time and canât even delegate responsibility for everything. Thatâs why itâs important to have this type of person (or several) in a group to rely on. In fact, if it were my group, Iâd want everyone to be like this. A group like that could crush the work and up-level the potential. A real dream team and every one would be seriously motivated and satisfied. If you tend to lack the ability to empower you, I understand your struggle. Itâs like everything else; you start small and build up your skill. You may have a fear for empowering you to step forward. If you do, most likely its irrational and you have to push through it. If you are performing your job it will be a rare and miserable manager that would punish you for showing up as an informal leader (even if they lack Leadership skills on some level they know it and know they need it in someone). The world needs more Leadership. Make it you. Help with pre algebra math problems and you can crack any tough algebraic sum Parents of the present generation are very much work oriented and so they are not able to devote much time on their children. This is the reason why the child faces lots of hurdles in their academic career. The child has to undergo various types of problems that make their grades slow down. In this high competitive market you need to be very focused on what you want to do and what you want to achieve. If you have strong will power then with little guidance only you can succeed. But the main problem that that of having good guidance. Schools are there to guide you but how much are they successful in guiding you. Today every school has good teachers but every teacher does not devote much time into one particular student or couple of students. They want every student to do on their own and just guide them lightly. This way neither the student learns well and the time also gets wasted. After school comes the name of private tutoring. There are many such tutors that bring in their own advertisement and promote themselves being a good teacher. But there is no one to judge as how much good they are. After a child gets admitted in such tuition classes they come to know about the efficiency of a teacher. And more than that, every tuition class has become coaching classes as well where many students are adjusted in one single class. This deviates the mind of the teacher and they cannot teach all the students with same concentration. This hampers the career of a student in the long run as they do not have a good base over their subjects. If the subject is itself very tough then it becomes much more difficult. Mathematics, science is such subject that needs special attention and also special treatment to go off with the subject. Having a good teacher beside you helps you to know the subject firmly and also deeply. The teacher brings you closer to the subject and also makes you aware of the pros and cons related with the subject. The subject becomes simpler and easier to deal with. Online tutoring is becoming the new choice for students These things are possible only with the help of a good teacher. Private tutors cannot fulfill that criteria and thus they fail to reach that limit. Only a new way of learning process can help you to survive in it and that is none other than the online way of learning. This may be a new way learning and very few may be accustomed with the process, but still with time it is gaining a lot of popularity. After students are getting to know the process is details they are really willing to make a choice once and give it a try. The process involves having an internet connection at your home. After you have an internet connection at your home you can easily access any such kind of classes. The process includes lots of advantages that if once known can drag you towards it and you can also think of availing its services. Now it is better that you get to know about the advantages of it so that you can make yourself closer to the concept and think of giving it a try. Advantages of online tutoring Among the long list of advantages, only few are there which I will share with you. These benefits will help you to get a chance to know about online tutoring and will help you to further think of availing it. In case of private tutoring there is no one to judge them that whether they are capable of the post or not. But here in the world of online tutoring things are not the same. Here every teacher appointed for any of the subjects has to go through a process of interview that is very tough to break. Here all the teachers are very well versed with the subject and thus can make a student gain that same amount of knowledge as well. The teachers are efficient enough to know the subject deeply. When you know the subject deeply then you can easily play with the subject and the subject and its problems becomes less. This helps in increasing the value of the teacher to a great extent. The students can also make the most out of it with the immense knowledge the teacher carries with it. The advantage of online tutoring is that the classes are open all round the clock. Yes, it is one of the greatest benefits anyone could ever get. It totally depends on the student as how they want to attend the classes. The classes can keep going with the way the student wants it. Here in such classes the student does not have to run here and there for attending the classes also. They can attend the classes sitting at home in their favorite and comfortable place and can avail the classes. This saves their time, energy and transportation expenses. If any student is weak at mathematics or any part of mathematics, say algebra, then he or she is given special care. The special care is that an individual student is guided by an individual teacher. Yes, this is a one-on-one service in which a single student is entertained by a single teacher. This increases the concentration of a student and also a sense of support works for them. Tutor Pace and its whereabouts TutorPace is a very renowned institute. It has some of the best services, some very efficient teachers who are there present all round the clock to help their students.
